Meeting Each Other's Friends, Late 2000

When two people grow up together in the same neighborhood, they are likely to know a lot of the same people. Cheryl and Mark grew up thousands of miles apart, and our lives only touched each other within the last several months; thus we each have whole separate universes of friends and family to introduce to each other, and over the latter half of 2000 we have begun to bring each other into these circles. Some events, like a party for the people in Mark's lab on 26 August 2000, we don't have pictures from; here are a few shots from some gatherings where we did bring a camera.

Cheryl & Lauren

Lauren is a special friend of Cheryl, a former co-worker; she was in town on 11 August 2000, and Mark met her and several of Cheryl's other colleagues during happy hour at the Paradise Restaurant near Cheryl's place of work; afterwards we went to Zazou, a restaurant in Redondo Beach that is special to Cheryl and Mark as the location of their first date dining out (on our first date, Cheryl invited Mark to dinner at her place).

On 20 August 2000, we invited Karl & Debbie and their daughter Anna to come from La Crescenta for a day at the beach. Karl & Debbie were a year ahead of Mark at Princeton and Caltech, and have been out to visit him numerous times since he moved to Hermosa Beach and they moved back to California; Anna is also an old friend, whom Mark has known all her life!

On 7 October 2000, we met Lily (another of Cheryl's former co-workers) and over a dozen friends at Buca di Beppo in Santa Monica for a birthday party for another friend, Donna; here are Mickie, Lily, Cheryl, and Mark in the very crowded, noisy, convivial "Beppo's Basement." There's another half of this table, plus another whole table behind the camera, full of our group!

And here's the birthday honoree, Donna, and her boyfriend Nader, opening the music box we brought her.

Quite a social whirl! Like our families, these friends are part of who we are, of what shaped us; we both look forward to introducing each other to the many other special friends whom we've not yet met.
