This and the next few pages in the album were written months after the fact; we have been very busy since Mark returned from his visit to Boston for Stella's baptism, with an Easter sanctuary drama based on Da Vinci's "The Last Supper," The Aerospace Players' production of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," buying a house, and of course our wedding! We have enjoyed several visits and outings with our friends as well, in the middle of all these activities.
On 24 March 2001, we met a large group of Cheryl's friends for a late birthday celebration at Tokyo Delve's in North Hollywood. This place is sort of hard to describe; it's a sushi bar with loud disco music and dancing waiters, plus plenty of encouragement to get up and dance yourself!
As you can see, Cheryl (and everybody else at the table but Mark, who didn't trust his balance!) wasn't shy about climbing up on her chair to join the dance! The ceiling is covered with balloons and lanterns, and there are plenty of flashing lights and loud music to get you thoroughly confused; the place is tiny, noisy, crowded, and a lot of fun. The food was very good too, and they gave Cheryl a nice birthday cake (and a party hat!).
The day we went to Tokyo Delve's was a major religious holiday for Mark--it was the day that Apple Computer released Mac OS X! The next holiday was Easter, on 15 April 2001, and after singing with the choir at both services we joined Chris, Susan, and Kathy (a former co-worker of Cheryl's) at the Shubert Theater in Century City to see Mamma Mia, a musical assembled from hit songs by ABBA. No new music was written for this show; the former members of the group who put it together described it as "the show we didn't know we had written" because the songs that they already had in hand could be strung together to tell a pretty darn good story about a girl trying to figure out, on the eve of her wedding, which of three possible men is her real father.
The following Saturday, 21 April 2001, JoAnna (a current co-worker of Cheryl's) and her husband Grant were in town from Phoenix, and they came out to join us for dinner. We took them to one of our very favorite restaurants, King's Hawaiian. This restaurant actually started in Honolulu; while we were there over Christmas and New Year's, Cheryl showed Mark where it used to be located before it moved to Torrance in 1988. Their loss, our gain! We love taking visitors there for a taste of the food Cheryl knew growing up, and which Mark has also come to enjoy greatly.
