Before our wedding, several friends came to visit us at our new house. On 10 August 2001 Jen, a friend of Cheryl since the 8th grade, was in town for a librarians' convention (she's a children's librarian in Seattle), so she dropped by to see the new house and to meet the man her friend was going to marry! We took her to The Stinking Rose, a restaurant downtown that (to put it mildly) celebrates garlic.
On 22 August 2001, another school friend came by. Here is Cheryl on our front porch with Cyrena, a friend from grad school who now lives in the San Francisco area.
Three days later Lily, Ken, and Donna came to visit; they were scouting the house as the location for the bridal shower they threw for Cheryl a couple of months later! We took them to Zazou, one of our special restaurants (where we went for our first dining-out date). Here are Ken, Lily, Cheryl, and Donna in front of our upstairs fireplace.
In early September we went on a visit of our own, to Mark's family home in St. Charles, Missouri. Cheryl had met Mark's father on a visit to his older brother's family in Phoenix the previous Thanksgiving; it was good to see him again, and to show Cheryl a little of the house and the town where Mark grew up. We also dug through the old family slide collection to get some shots for the "her/him/us" slide show we planned for our reception. And we introduced Cheryl to one other very special person in town: here we are at the Mother-In-Law House, a restaurant in the historical district, with Dad and Mrs. Quarterman. She is a long-time family friend with whom Dad has been spending a lot of time lately; we're very glad that he has somebody to talk to and enjoy doing things with at home, since all his children and grandchildren are hundreds or thousands of miles away!
