At eleven months, Lura had four teeth, with more on the way.
About one week a month, Mark and some colleagues go up to the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (up the hill from UC Berkeley) to test electronic parts in the cyclotron there. During the first week of August, Cheryl and Lura accompanied him on one of these trips for the first time! Here are Lura and Mark deep in the bowels of the beast. Lura didn't find the racket of the fans and vacuum pumps to be at all alarming.
Mark nearly always stays at the Holiday Inn Express when he's at Berkeley, and we stayed there during this visit. This meant that Cheryl finally got to meet some of the people at the front desk with whom she's spoken many times when she calls Mark! Here she and Lura are with Luis.
After the cyclotron run was over, we headed south to San Jose to spend the weekend with Lily, Ken, and Justin.
We also linked up with JoAnna, Grant, Amanda, and JoAnna's sister Jennifer for dinner and dessert on 7 August 2004.
It looks like Justin has told the girls a hilarious joke!
Lily and Ken took us to Happy Hollow, a nearby amusement park, where Lura had her first ride on a merry-go-round! She doesn't look thrilled in this photo, but once it began to move (and the music started) she had a good time, waving to Mark as she and Cheryl went around.
On 18 August 2004, Jen and David drove down to have lunch with Cheryl and Lura. Here they are standing in front of the big pineapple at King's Hawaiian Restaurant, but the kids are more interested in the aquarium!
Earlier this year Cheryl and Lura took a "Mommy and Me" class with a group of mothers and kids who enjoyed each other's company so much that they decided to stay in touch after the class ended and continue to do things together. Here we are on 22 August 2004, attending a free concert at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach with the group. Cheryl has fond memories of taking a picnic supper to concerts when she was little, so she packed a nice bento for us to enjoy.
This photo is for Mark's Dad in particular; he wanted us to see if we could find and post a photo of Lura with a certain expression on her face that he enjoyed. Is this the one you had in mind, Grandpa?
