October means Halloween, and Lura is pretty inventive about costumes. Red pants and Mark's old Coca-Cola oven mitts make a pretty convincing lobster, wouldn't you say?
With Mark's jacket draped over her, we're not sure if she's trying to be Mr. Spock from the fourth Star Trek movie, or if that's an elvish cloak from The Lord of the Rings.
Mark's shoes let her do a pretty good baby Bigfoot.
A bag from Disneyland lets her be every character all at once!
Last year Grandma made her a clown costume, and when decision time came this year, Cheryl made her a gingham dress like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, complete with glittery "ruby slippers" and braids! Here she is at class a few days before Halloween, with all the other kids in costume too.
Mark doesn't remember what Lura was pointing at in the sky when he shot this photo. A bird? A plane? The Wicked Witch of the West writing "Surrender Dorothy" in smoke across the sky?
We stayed in to pass out candy on Halloween itself, but before then Lura got to wear the costume on several occasions. On October 29th Mark's colleague Rebecca hosted a party, and here Lura enjoys snacks with Emma, the daughter of his coworkers and friends Bill and Susan. (Lura borrowed the wand from another coworker who came dressed as Tinkerbell.)
The next evening we went to "Mickey's Halloween Treat," a "not so scary" gathering at the California Adventure park next door to Disneyland. We mostly walked around and collected candy (and stickers!), but Lura did go on a couple of rides. Here she sits astride a whale on a carousel.
Fast forward to Thanksgiving: our friends Mark, Grace, and Iris had a large number of family in town, and we joined them too. Cheryl cooked the turkey, and they made all the side dishes; it's a lot easier if you can use two ovens in parallel! Before we carried the turkey over, Lura rode over on this tricycle, which as it happens was a hand-me-down from Iris (one of many items she's given us!).
After dinner Iris was very generous sharing her toys with Lura, and Lura also enjoyed watching her play Flash games on the family laptop, which Mark approvingly noted was an Apple iBook.
If Lura were to draw up a list of things for which she's thankful, "everything Disney" would be high up on the list! Here she is watching The Lion King DVD, in the company of Mickey and Minnie Mouse (and her mouse-ears hat!) and also the big lion that Cheryl picked up some years ago at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Oh, and wearing diapers with Simba and Nala on them too, most likely!
