Koi on Boys' Day

May 5th is Boys' Day in Japanese tradition. When Mark and his brothers were little, we had koi (carp) "windsock" flags to hang up, and we wanted David to be able to share in the tradition too.

Lura's new boots

Mark, the father of Lura's friend Dylan, works for Skechers; he found these boots in their children's line, and thought she'd like them. Judging by her expression (and the fact that she wants to wear them whenever we give her the choice), she does!

Test-driving double stroller

On May 20th, we went to Babies R Us again to choose a double stroller. We had been leaning toward a tandem (fore and aft) setup, but decided that this side-by-side rig was more easily maneuvered. Of course, we test-drove it first! David's car seat straps into one side until he's big enough to sit in the seat itself.

Tub of suds

On May 25th, Teacher Lynn at Lura and Cheryl's "Mommy and Me" class set up a tub of sudsy water for the kids to play in. Some of the moms groaned when they saw this--"did I pack an extra outfit to put on after he/she gets wet and rolls in the sand pit?"--but the kids loved it!

Big smile!

David is starting to smile back when we smile at him; here he is on May 27th, nine weeks old.

Mark, long and long ago

Cheryl thinks the previous photo of David looks a lot like this photo of Mark when he was about the same age (we used this in the slide show at our wedding reception).

Play-Doh spaghetti

May 28th, Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend, was an exciting day! In the morning, Lura played with her Play-Doh on the waterproof mat that we employ to keep it from getting ground into the carpet (it gets pretty well ground into her PJs, though!). She has a variety of sculpting tools, including this garlic press that she uses to make "pasghetti." We swear she used to say "spaghetti," but this seems to be a universal kid pronunciation. She's worked over the Play-Doh a lot in the couple of weeks since her friend Laykin's family brought it, along with dinner--there used to be separate cans of blue and yellow, but it has been thoroughly mixed!

Watching big sister

Here David watches his big sister as he gets some "tummy time."

With Amy

Our good friend Amy, who had "chaperoned" Mark and Cheryl when we were first dating, was in town to see a friend's show, and she stopped by before lunch to see us and to meet David. Note the shoes that Lura's holding; these make a satisfying tapping sound on the tile just inside our front door, and Amy showed her some steps! She also gave her a nice silver hair clip in the shape of a butterfly, which she had worn while performing in "Cloud Nine." You meet some of the nicest people on stage! We aren't going to push Lura or David in that direction, but we hope that they'll pick up on how much we enjoy performing, and how many friends we've made that way (including each other!).

Ready for the festival

After Lura's nap, we went down to the Fiesta Hermosa near the ocean in Hermosa Beach, which is held over the Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends each year, and which we have seldom missed since we met. (It was easier to get to when Mark lived in an apartment a few blocks away!) Cheryl carried David in a sling, and Mark carried Lura in the backpack that our friends Karl, Debbie, and Anna had given us not long after she was born. We don't use it all that often, but when we do, it's a lifesaver! The lines for the shuttle buses back to the parking lot where we left the minivan were so long that we decided to walk; it would have been a lot harder to carry Lura any other way (too crowded at the festival for strollers), and we doubt she'd have been up for the long hike.

Looking at one big dish of ice cream!

After walking around the festival but before heading back to the parking lot, we stopped at the Coldstone Creamery. Here Lura (still in the backpack!) and Mark are awed by the huge picture of a very tasty-looking ice cream sundae on the wall! The smaller ones we got were still very refreshing.
