Around Gail's Visit, 14 March - 2 April 2004

Three generations

Mom flew back to Hawaii on 14 March 2004; here's our now-traditional photo of her, Cheryl, and Lura. Compare Lura here at 6 1/2 months with our earlier photos at 4 3/4 months, eleven weeks, and four weeks!

Asleep on Gail's shoulder

About a week later Cheryl's youngest sister Gail came out for a visit (and, as on her previous visit, to help out a lot too!). Lura quickly became very comfortable with her again.

Major-General who?

We were particularly grateful to Mom and Gail for coming by during this period because Mark was away a lot of the time rehearsing as the Major-General in our church theater group's production of "The Pirates of Penzance." Here Lura is sizing up Daddy in his costume and makeup after a show; she's clearly not quite sure what to make of this strange-looking man with her Daddy's voice, though she didn't show any evidence of being frightened.

Wwww!

Here Lura is practicing her "wwww!" sound.

iChat AV

The week of 22 March 2004 (between the two weekends of "Pirates" performances) Mark went up to Berkeley again. The Aerospace Mac Users' Group had, on his recommendation, bought a pair of Apple iSight videoconferencing cameras; we have DSL at home and the hotel where he stays has in-room high-speed Internet access, so we set one up at home and he took one along, and we were able to see each other as well as talk! Lura still hadn't quite figured out how Mommy was able to stuff Daddy into her tiny little cell phone, but she had no trouble understanding about playing "peek-a-boo" around the borders of the video-chat window! (This is a frame grab from Mark's laptop.)

Gail, Cheryl, and Lura

Gail went home at the end of March. We were very happy to see her, as well as grateful for her help; Lura clearly thinks highly of her auntie!

Happy, if messy

She also got very good at eating more, and more kinds of, solid food throughout the month. She even learned, rather quickly, that not using her hands helps us feed her a lot more efficiently!

I have toes!

Here's Lura just short of seven months old. She enjoys grabbing her toes, and sometimes gets distracted from other things she's doing when she notices them down there at the ends of her legs.
