The first weekend of April 2004, we flew up to San Jose to celebrate the first birthday of Lily & Ken's son Justin. Lura traveled on Mommy's lap (mostly), but we packed her car seat along, and here she is sitting next to Justin on the way to the party at a local restaurant.
Mark tended the kids in their strollers while Cheryl helped Lily and Ken set up. There were dozens of family and friends, adults and kids, there to help Justin celebrate.
Here Mark is explaining that, while Lura is getting pretty good with the solid foods, birthday cake is just a little too solid for her at the moment, and she shouldn't try to grab it off the fork.
Actually, when Lura gets hungry, she's much more likely simply to "go for it" and grab a mouthful of Mommy's chin, or neck, or whatever's in reach!
The birthday boy plainly partied hardy...
...as did his guests.
Justin was generous enough to let Lura try on his birthday crown. Clearly the Jester has made a joke that greatly amused Princess Lura!
Justin is also generous with his kisses. [Foghorn Leghorn voice:] "Son, what're yo' intentions towards mah daughter?"
The evening after the party Grant, JoAnna, and their daughter Amanda came over to Lily, Ken, and Justin's (where we were staying) to watch Justin open his presents. Lura is picking up some pointers here by watching the older kids. "Show me again how you get your feet under you!"
We gave him a set of stacking buckets, for the beach or indoors. Lura enjoyed all the bright colors of wrapping paper and toys! We look forward to celebrating her first birthday in Hawaii.
