Lura and Cheryl started the new year off right, with a trip to Disneyland on January 3rd. Here is the "It's A Small World" ride, still decked out in both 50th anniversary and Christmas finery.
In addition to the rides (well, some of them anyway), the shows, and the characters wandering the grounds, Lura always enjoys the food here!
Here are Lura and Ivy playing in the park on January 6th.
At Christmas we gave Lura this baby doll, who joins her here for tea. He came fully equipped with the high chair, plus the stroller and swing you can see in the background, plus a playpen and more--this kid has more gear than Lura!
Lura and Dylan often go together to get their hair cut at a mall in Newport Beach that also has this great train ride. Dylan has been a huge fan of trains, especially Thomas the Tank Engine, for as long as we've known him, and it's rubbing off on Lura.
In south Redondo Beach, across the street from where Mark used to live, is a power generating plant that hosts a "Science Education Adventure Laboratory" (SEA Lab). Among other things, they rescue and release sea life that has been sucked into the power plant's water intakes. Lura is always fascinated by the creatures she sees in the tanks there.
Of course, she enjoys playing with Dylan and her other friends there too!
On January 21st, we joined Dylan at the Lomita Railroad Museum in the morning to celebrate his birthday. The theme of the party decorations was "Thomas the Tank Engine"--we said he's a big fan!
There are several railroad cars and locomotives there that you can climb on and walk inside, as well as exhibits on local and national railway history in a reconstructed station on the grounds.
Of course, there was birthday cake! We had a bit of an adventure lighting the candle, since nobody smoked and so we didn't have a lighter handy; we ended up borrowing one from a guy on a construction crew working down the street (we thanked them with some cold sodas--the weather was pretty warm!). Lura almost totally ignores the cake itself, preferring to eat just the frosting with a spoon. Dylan has other priorities!
The next day we had lunch at a local Italian restaurant, and Lura learned to twirl spaghetti on a fork for the first time.
A week later, we went to Veterans' Park near the ocean and Lura played in the sand there, with Daddy and a young chap we met there. Toys get treated kind of communally at these parks; Mark doesn't remember if these were hers, his, or some third party's that we found sitting there. Fortunately, Lura is pretty good about sharing and taking turns, as long as the other kid (or a parent, either hers or the other kid's) asks first rather than grabbing! Grabbing things from Lura can quickly escalate to a "move those hands or lose them" situation...
