As we've noted, David is a lot more wiggly than Lura was at this age. In fact, he's been quite an escape artist from very early on; it's nearly impossible to keep him swaddled! Here he's reaching not only out of his blanket but out of his cradle.
Grandma went back to Hawaii on April 19th, four weeks after David was born. We are extremely grateful to her for the help she provided at the births of both her grandchildren! Before she left, she went to Lura's music class; Mommy wasn't able to dance with her because she was holding David, but Grandma more than made up for it!
We've been taking photos of Lura with her Mommy and Grandma at the end of each of Grandma's visits since Lura has been born, and now we'll add David to the photos in our collection!
Lura is incredibly good about asking for things that aren't her toys or books, rather than just grabbing them. Sometimes this leads to funny situations, like when she asked Mark "may I touch the dangerous things?" as she watched him empty all his gear, including a pocketknife, out of his pockets after work. We're not sure if we told her the knife was dangerous sometime and forgot that we had... David isn't dangerous, but she still likes to ask "may I hold him?"
Of course, sometimes she hugs him harder than other times!
On April 28th, Cheryl took the kids to the Long Beach Aquarium. Somebody there is pretty smart about what grabs the interest of all these little "Finding Nemo" fans, and so they had a tank full of clownfish (Nemo and Marlin) and regal blue tangs (Dory).
The next day, we went to a restaurant together for the first time since David was born. The "birdie restaurant" (Red Robin) is one of Lura's favorites (carousel horses!), and ours too.
The day after that, we manned the hospitality table at the coffee hour after church. Lura was delighted to show off her baby brother to any and all comers, including Gracie (who had met him a couple of weeks earlier).
That afternoon, our friends Woody and Susan from The Aerospace Players dropped by to visit us and to meet David. They are the ones who gave us Cricket a few months after we were married, but she was feeling shy and hid upstairs (as did Melody, of course).
As part of our efforts to rearrange the house to convert Mark's junk room into David's bedroom (once he outgrows his cradle), we moved our main computer downstairs into the dining room. Lura loves to play the Flash-based Sesame Street games, and she has learned to work the mouse, so she can do more than just sit on our laps and watch us play them now!
With all that's going on in our lives, we sleep very well when we get a chance to sleep at all! David will typically sleep for four or five hours after we put him in his cradle for the night (of course, we don't get to sleep that long, since we have to stay up to take care of chores that we couldn't do while caring for the kids!), but after that he wakes up hungry about every couple of hours. Sometimes, after Cheryl nurses him at 5 or 6 a.m., Mark will take him downstairs and lie down on the couch with him on his chest. Then when he wiggles himself awake, Mark can pat his back and rock him, and if he's not really hungry he'll go back to sleep. Mark doesn't have to wake up all the way either, and Cheryl can sleep undisturbed for maybe an extra hour. The things we gotta do to catch some shuteye!
